CHAPTER ONE

Day Zero +19

Tatum, Erick, Reid, Frank, Edgar, and Devin gathered around the crackling radio in the compound nestled just north of St. Maries. Days had blurred into nights as they remained tethered to the updates pouring in from Spokane.

Six days had passed since the military's bold advance into Spokane, a maneuver that seemed to be paying off. Their ranks swelled with each passing day as they relentlessly purged the encroaching horrors from the suburban fringes of the bustling city.

Rotating in shifts, the group kept vigil over the airwaves. Despite the pressing need to fortify their own sanctuary in St. Maries, the influx of survivors from Spokane demanded their attention. The primary radio, tuned to the military command channel, provided only fragments of the larger picture, supplemented by sporadic reports from local contacts.

A voice crackled through the static.

"Command, come in, this is Alpha seven reporting."

"What's your status, Alpha seven?" came the reply from command.

"It was a bitch and a half, but we managed to clear the Super Center up here on the north side of town."

"You'll need to be more specific, Alpha seven. Are you in Spokane proper? Suburbs?"

"Sorry, Command. We're in Trentwood, I believe."

"Copy that, Alpha seven. What's your next destination?"

"There's a strip mall with some big box stores across the street that looks like there's some activity. After that, I'll be escorting the volunteers to the neighborhood due north of here. We'll clear it out until dark."

"Thank you, Alpha seven. Happy hunting," replied command, as the transmission faded back into the static hum of uncertainty.

The airwaves fell silent, a common occurrence now amidst the ongoing assault. In the initial days, the chatter had been incessant, a chaotic symphony difficult to decipher. However, with the focus squarely on Seattle, communication had dwindled significantly.

"How are they only in Trentwood?" Reid's voice broke the silence, laden with frustration. "That's still a good ten miles outside the eastern portion of Spokane. Why is it taking them so long to clear them out?"

"Skeleton crew maybe?" Erick offered, a hint of uncertainty in his tone.

"Yeah, if they're focused on the Seattle invasion, maybe they're not too concerned with those things that are locked up tight," Frank speculated.

"Maybe they're just not as good as we are when it comes to clearing those things out," Edgar suggested, his voice tinged with a hint of superiority.

"That's probably a safe bet. It's taken them damn near three weeks to start making a difference," Devin remarked, his tone reflecting a mix of disappointment and skepticism.

"Yeah, but I still don't get why it's taking them so long?" Reid persisted, his frustration palpable. "They have tens of thousands of troops at a minimum. It shouldn't be that difficult."

Tatum sat in solemn silence before breaking it with a somber tone.

"Maybe they're not using soldiers," he stated.

All eyes turned towards him, curiosity etched on their faces.

"Why wouldn't they be using soldiers?" Frank inquired.

"They're probably soldiers, just not the desirable ones," Tatum explained, prompting puzzled
